Over the last few years, the restoration work on the Pio’s complex has brought to light important fresco cycles dating back to the second half of the 15th century, which shed a light on 15th century painting history in Carpi.
The fresco cycles were not considered much, since they were covered, not only physically, by the Renaissance decorations wanted by Alberto Pio, but today they are starting to emerge in all their historical and iconographic importance: from the middle of the century we find wall paintings updated to the most innovative iconographic choices of the Italian courts of the moment, with a particular connection with what was produced at that time at the Ferrara court of the Estense family.
The conditions of the paintings don’t allow us to make a complete profile of a historical and critical nature, however some powerful iconographies emerge as of now that trace back to the animal world, real or fantastic or allegorical, which place the court of Carpi in the trail of the most important decorative tradition of the fifteenth century.
Through sixty works of art, ancient books, amazing objects and multimedia installations, the exhibition narrates the “animal presences” in the Pio’s Palace with also a glance on the contemporary.
